Pix Firewalls from Cisco are an accepted standard
for high security. The Pix is an appliance , a piece of hardware , not
simply software sitting on one of your computers connected to the internet.
The Pix sits between you and the internet. The Pix runs its own proprietary
operating system , making it far less vulnerable to hacking than software
firewalls running on Unix or Windows. The Pix can be configured to deny or
permit the full range of internet protocols; specific addresses , internal
and external may be allowed or blocked. The Pix supports physical or virtual
DMZ's , allowing you to run a public web server on your LAN, without
exposing your entire network to the world.
This is a sophisticated tool, but as Cisco produces a
number of models , this level of security does not have to be very
